The Flat Bar Grades window ( Job Settings )

Shown here are the columns you get for the " ASD/ LRFD/ CISC " tab. You will get additional columns if the " AS4100 " or " Eurocode " tab is shown. Which of these tabs is shown depends on the selected " Connection design method ."
  • The Flat Bar Grades window lets you add a new steel grade so that you can assign it to flat bar material. You can also use it to edit existing steel grades. Please read and understand the warnings before you make any changes to this window.
  • Warning 1: Use caution when changing the Fu and Fy values assigned to particular steel grades. The Fu and Fy values assigned to steel grades in the default Job Settings file are the correct ultimate strength and yield strength values for those grades. Changing Fu and Fy values affects connection design .
  • Warning 2: Changing any steel grade definition (for example, changing line 3) assigns the new definition to all materials that had been assigned the previous definition. Since a steel grade is assigned to a material by its line number (index), this means that if you switch line 3 with line 4, the steel grades of existing materials using those definitions will also be switched.
  • The steel grade entered to line 1 on this window is assigned by default to the first flat bar material that is added using Add Material or Add Miscellaneous Member after you start Modeling . If, on the material edit window, you enter a different " Steel grade ," each subsequently Added flat bar is assigned that steel grade until you change the steel grade or restart Modeling .
  • Cut ( Ctrl + x ), copy ( Ctrl + c ) and paste ( Ctrl + v ) are available to help you more quickly edit steel grades. You can also choose " Cut " " Copy " or " Paste " on the context menu that opens when you right-click a cell. See warning 2 .

Step-by-step instructions :

1 . To open the Flat Bar Grades window, use one (1) of the following methods:

Method 1 : Home > Project Settings > Job > Material Grades > Flat Bar Grades .

Methods 2, 3 & 4 : In Modeling or the Drawing Editor , choose Settings > Job Settings > Flat Bar Grades (classic), or use a keyboard shortcut , or click the icon.

2 . The Flat Bar Grades window opens. Which tab is shown on the window depends on the " Connection design method " that you are using. For example, the " ASD/LRFD/CISC " tab is shown when ' LRFD13 ' is the " Connection design method ."

Tab Columns When Shown
" ASD/LRFD/CISC "
" Line number " " Steel Grade " " Nonstandard Notation " " Fy " " Fu " " Ry " " Rt "
shown when ' ASD13 ' or ' LRFD13 ' or ' CISC8 ' or ' CISC9 ' or ' ASD9 ' or ' LRFD3 ' or ' ASD1 ' or ' LRFD14 ' or ' CISC10 ' is the " Connection design method ."
" AS4100 " " Line number " " Steel Grade " " Nonstandard Notation " " Fy " " Fu " " Minimum Thickness " " Maximum Thickness " shown when ' AS 4100 ' is the " Connection design method ."
" Eurocode " " Line number " " Steel Grade " " Nonstandard Notation " " Fy " " Fu " " Minimum Thickness " " Maximum Thickness " " Correlation Factor " shown when ' EUROCODE3 ' or ' EUROCODE3 UK ' is the " Connection design method ."

Note: Cells under the " ASD/LRFD/CISC " tab are filled out automatically with the same grades that are set in Plate Grades .

3 . Before making any changes to this window, see Warning 1 and Warning 2 . To add a new steel grade, fill out the columns for the first blank line (press the Tab key or Shift + Tab to move from cell to cell). The type of information that may be entered beneath a particular column on this window is explained below:

Line number: The index number (a positive integer) of the steel grade -- see Warning 2 . Line 1 sets the default steel grade and is the standard steel grade that may be referenced when Home > Project Settings > Fabricator > Member and Material Piecemarking > the " Submaterial " tab > " Show non-std grade notation with piecemarks on member details " is checked.

Steel Grade: Any text string (up to 29 characters) to denote the name of the steel grade (e.g., A36 , A401 , Peter , Joe , whatever name you want). Steel grades entered here are selectable ( ) as the " Steel grade " on the Flat Bar Material window.

Nonstandard Notation: Any text string (up to 29 characters) to denote that a particular steel grade is not the standard steel grade.

For submaterials: A callout is generated next to that material's submaterial piecemark callout on the member detail when Home > Project Settings > Fabricator > Member and Material Piecemarking > the " Submaterial " tab > " Show non-std grade notation with piecemarks on member details " is checked. The callout will consist of the steel grade if you do not enter a " Nonstandard Notation ." If, on the other hand, a " Nonstandard Notation " has been entered, that notation would be called out instead of the steel grade. For example, you might enter Non Std as a " Nonstandard Notation ."

Minimum Thickness & Maximum Thickness (" AS4100 " and " Eurocode "): These columns let you assign Fy (yield strength) and Fu (ultimate strength) values to a particular steel grade based on the thickness of the flat bar material.

Fy: The yield strength of the steel grade. If you are using imperial dimensioning, yield strength is measured in kips/sq. inch (ksi). If you are using metric dimensioning, yield strength is in megapascals (MPa). The value you enter for Fy is used to design connections.

Fu: The ultimate strength of the steel grade. If you are using imperial dimensioning, ultimate strength is measured in kips/sq. inch (ksi). If you are using metric dimensioning, ultimate strength is in megapascals (MPa). The value you enter for Fu is used to design connections.

Ry (" ASD/LRFD "): The ratio (no units) of expected yield stress to the specified minimum yield stress, Fy. See section I-6 of the AISC Seismic Design Manual . This overstrength factor is used during connection design for calculations related to member strength when the user has specified a " Seismic brace " (vertical brace). The default values used for " Ry " come from Table I -6 -1 of the AISC Seismic Design Manual . " Ry " is used only when the governing load (" Tension load " or " Compression load ") is " Auto ." " Ry " and " Rt " are not used for user-entered loads.

Rt (" ASD/LRFD "): The ratio (no units) of the expected tensile strength to the specified minimum tensile strength, Fu, as related to overstrength in material yield stress Ry. See section I-6 of the AISC Seismic Design Manual . This overstrength factor is used during connection design when the user has specified a " Seismic brace ." The default values used for " Rt " come from Table I -6 -1 of the AISC Seismic Design Manual . " Rt " is used only when the governing load (" Tension load " or " Compression load ") is " Auto ." " Ry " and " Rt " are not used for user-entered loads.

Correlation Factor (" Eurocode "): The appropriate correlation factorw ) taken from Table 4.1 in BS EN 1993-1-8: 2005, " Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures ." The factor is used in calculations for fillet welds.

4 . When you are done making changes to the Flat Bar Grades window, use the buttons at the bottom of this window to reorder listings on the window or close the window or undo your changes.

"Move Up" or "Move Down" changes the order of items on the window. Warning!! If you move a steel grade to a line number whose steel grade has already been assigned to materials in your current Job, when you press " OK " those materials are assigned the newly moved steel grade -- see Warning 2 .

"OK" (or the Enter key) closes the window and saves the settings on it to the Job Settings file in your current Job . See Warning 1 & 2 .

"Cancel" (or the Esc key or the button) closes the window without saving any changes.

"Reset" undoes all changes made to this window since you originally opened it. The window remains open.
